Disposing of asbestos at the Merrick Landfill

North Bay, ON – Nov. 30, 2022 –In order to safely dispose of asbestos materials at the Merrick Landfill, homeowners who need to dispose of residential asbestos waste from their home are required to obtain approval in advance through a request form available online.

Those with approved applications must also provide notification of at least 24 hours prior to asbestos material arriving at the Merrick Landfill.

All asbestos material arriving at the Merrick Landfill shall be weighed onsite and will be subject to a $200 surcharge, as well as a $102-per-ton fee with a $20 minimum charge. All asbestos material must be wrapped in yellow asbestos bags and sealed to prevent any air-borne particles. Bags are available at local outlets including, Sling-Choker Mfg., TransCanada Safety and Selene Plastic Bags, or online through various suppliers.

Asbestos is a hazardous material that was used in construction and heat proofing before the 1980s and may be found when renovating old buildings.

These requirements, which are also applicable to commercial asbestos waste deliveries, are in place to protect customers and staff at the Merrick Landfill from exposure to asbestos, and to meet regulatory requirements.
