The Merrick Landfill is located at 4 Sand Dam Road, North Bay, approximately 21 kilometers from downtown North Bay, off Highway 11 at the end of Sand Dam Road.
The Merrick Landfill Site operates under the Ministry of Environment Conservation and Parks (MECP) Provisional Certificate of Approval No. A530116. The amended Approval provides for the disposal of domestic, commercial and non-hazardous solid industrial wastes (including digested sewage sludge from the North Bay Wastewater Pollution Control Plant) within a 16.4-hectare area of a 360-hectare site. The Site is approved to accept the designated wastes from the City of North Bay and Municipality of Callander and unorganized townships of Blythe, Merrick, Stewart, Lyman, Notman, Gladman, and Hammell.

ASBESTOS AND CONTAMINATED SOIL - DOWNLOADABLE FORM
All Asbestos and Contaminated Soil Disposal requests must include this form
***MINIMUM 24 HOURS NOTICE FOR ALL SOIL AND ASBESTOS DISPOSAL***
At the Merrick Landfill, we have processes and policies which allow us to safely accept asbestos and certain contaminated soils.
For asbestos: All requests to dispose of asbestos must be made at least 24 hours in advance of bringing it to the landfill, and the above form must be filled out and sent to merricklandfill@northbay.ca. Please call the Merrick Landfill at 705-495-0746 before sending requests and do not assume the load is approved until you receive confirmation from staff. E-mails are not always monitored. All asbestos must be disposed of in accordance with provincial regulations.
For Contaminated Soils: For Contaminated Soils to be accepted at Merrick Landfill, the soil must be tested to Schedule 4 Leachate Quality Criteria as determined by a certified laboratory using approved TCLP or mSPLP. All samples must also be tested for PFAS and show non-detection. Additional samples or parameters may be requested, please confirm with the Landfill Coordinator.
Sampling of the soil will be conducted in such a way as to provide results representative of the full amount of soil. All Ontario Regulation 558 sample results shall be provided to the City with the return of this form. Deliveries to the Merrick Landfill will be rejected if analytical results have not been approved.
For Clean Fill: Clean Fill must meet Table 1 Agricultural Standards as listed in the Soil, Groundwater and Sediment Standards for use under Part XV.1 of the EPA, April 5, 2011.

About the Mattress Recycling Program
The Mattress Recycling Program started in 2017. On average, around 5000 mattresses/box springs per year are kept out of the landfill through this program, which is roughly the volume of an Olympic swimming pool! Recycling mattresses helps reduce waste and saves valuable space in the landfill.
The mattresses are collected on site, loaded onto a trailer, and sent to the facility where they are recycled. There, they are broken down into their parts (fabric, foam, wood, metal), and those materials are repurposed or recycled.
Participating in the Mattress Recycling Program
Thank you for your interest in taking part in this program. With your help, we can extend the life of the landfill, keep materials from being landfilled unnecessarily, and do our part to protect the environment.
Please ensure when transporting mattresses that the load is fully secured. When arriving on site, the Scale Attendant will instruct you where the mattress holding area is. A staff member will meet you at the mattress holding area to show you where to stack your mattresses. All mattresses must be stacked according to size. If the current pile is too high to stack onto, you will be asked to place your mattress on the ground next to it by staff.
Mattresses may be left in plastic bags if that is how they were transported. If mattresses were folded and strapped, the strapping must be removed, and the mattress lied flat. No garbage is to be left in the mattress holding area.
Exceptions
To help protect the health and safety of customers and staff, please note that any mattresses or box springs known or suspected to contain bedbugs or potentially biohazardous substances (blood, feces, urine, etc.) will be required to be treated as waste and brought to the active landfilling area.
