Hammond Street and Third Avenue bridge removal

North Bay, ON – June 8, 2023 - A construction project involving the removal of the bridge over Chippewa Creek at Third Avenue and Hammond Street is expected to proceed this summer to help improve safety and mitigate the risk of flooding to nearby properties.

A request for tender for the project recently closed and the award of a contract will be brought before Council for approval later this month.

The project involves removal of the bridge, termination of the road connection between Third Avenue and Hammond Street, construction of two cul-de-sacs, reconfiguration of the multi-use pathway and the addition of new parking spaces. Resurfacing of Hammond Street between the new cul-de-sac and Hardy Street is also included.

The nearly 100-year-old bridge is failing and has been subject to load restrictions. Removing the bridge and terminating the road connection between Hammond Street and Third Avenue with cul-de-sacs was the preferred option recommended by an environmental assessment (EA) completed in 2014 to review options for the aging infrastructure. The EA considered removal, replacement, or repair of the bridge.

As a result of earlier consultation with the City Municipal Heritage Committee, portions of the bridge’s balusters and railing will be preserved.

Pending the award of a contract, construction would begin in July with completion scheduled for late fall. Additional details, including start date, potential disruptions and detour information will be communicated prior to construction.
