North Bay, ON – May 21, 2020 – The City of North Bay will again designate Memorial Drive as an active transportation route during the upcoming weekend in an effort to assist with physical distancing requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Memorial Drive will be closed between Regina Street and the Marina starting Friday, May 22, at 3 p.m. and will reopen Monday, May 25, at 8 a.m. The closure is designed to allow those who are cycling and walking maintain a safe distance by using the roadway. Vehicles will be able to access the waterfront parking lots and Marina entrance. Signage indicating no through traffic will be posted ahead of both entrances to Memorial Drive along Lakeshore Drive and Main Street West.
“We received a lot of positive feedback about designating Memorial Drive an active transportation route during the Victoria Day weekend and we want to continue to ensure there’s enough space at the Waterfront for our residents to get out and enjoy the fresh air while maintaining the required two-metre physical distance from others,” said Mayor Al McDonald. “This initiative is aligned with our top priority of protecting the health and safety of our residents.”
While the use of benches, picnic tables and shelters at our parks is now permitted, residents are reminded that beaches and public washrooms remain closed under provincial orders. In all cases, physical distancing of at least two metres is required and groups of more than five people are still restricted. Play structures, swings, slides, splash pads and outdoor exercise equipment also remain closed.
